Mid-Event Survey

1. What are you reading right now?

dragonfly in amber

2. How many books have you read so far?

I have yet to finish either but I have been reading two books at the same time. See above.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?

soundless

4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?

Sort of. There was a part here and it was very loud and hard to focus on reading when I wanted to join the fun. I put my headphones on for this to try and down out the noise. My boyfriend also got a bit drunk which means he kept coming in and wanting attention so which I limited him to a kiss per hour. It sort of worked.  Then I slept, which there isn’t any dealing with that.

5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?

How long its taking me to do some of these challenges. Aren’t these things supposed to be quick so we can get back to reading after a short fun breaking?

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon – April 2016 (Hour 11)

DEWEY's

Feelings:

So I had a nap in hour 8 and awoke this hour to see that I won a prize in hour 9. Very exciting. I don’t know what to do about Dragonfly In Amber. When I was falling asleep I was listening to it on audio book and I am not sure I got it all… To go back as far as I think I need to and count the pages again? Or just go forward and trust I didn’t miss too much?

What I Read:

  1. Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon
  2. Special by Georgia Blain

Pages Read: 32

Share A Quote

Since I cannot help myself, I am going to share two. They are short and are both from Dragonfly In Amber by Diana Gabaldon.

I stood still, vision blurring, and in that moment, I heard my heart break. It was a small, clean sound, like the snapping of flower’s stem.

and

Torn between the impulse to stroke his head, and the urge to cave it in with a rock, I did neither.

Character Destination

I choose Rose Hathaway because really, if there are no strigoi to kill she would make the trip amazing.  Now the actual destination part I find hard. Being in Australia there isn’t really anywhere I want to road trip here much…

I suppose we can start off in Victoria even though I don’t live there and drive along the Great Ocean Road and see things like the 12 Apostles, then drive all the way up to northern Queensland and do things like the Great Barrier Reef, and finally Daintree Rainforest.

Graphic Novel Review – The Sandman: The Dream Hunters

sandman-dreamhunters

Title: The Dream Hunters [The Sandman 11]

Author: Neil Gaiman

Genre: Fantasy, Graphic Novel

Length: 128

Rating: 4 Star

BuyFrom_Grey_160x30

Description/Synopsis:

Sandman fans should feel lucky that master fantasy writer Neil Gaiman discovered the mythical world of Japanese fables while researching his translation of Hayao Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke. The product of Gaiman’s immersion in Japanese art, culture, and history, Sandman: Dream Hunters is a classic Japanese tale (adapted from “The Fox, the Monk, and the Mikado of All Night’s Dreaming”) that he has subtly morphed into his Sandman universe.

Like most fables, the story begins with a wager between two jealous animals, a fox and a badger: which of them can drive a young monk from his solitary temple? The winner will make the temple into a new fox or badger home. But as the fox adopts the form of a woman to woo the monk from his hermitage, she falls in love with him. Meanwhile, in far away Kyoto, the wealthy Master of Yin-Yang, the onmyoji, is plagued by his fears and seeks tranquility in his command of sorcery. He learns of the monk and his inner peace; he dispatches demons to plague the monk in his dreams and eventually kill him to bring his peace to the onmyoji. The fox overhears the demons on their way to the monk and begins her struggle to save the man whom at first she so envied.

Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

This is a beautiful example of why I love and adore graphic novels.

Well done graphic novels are just stunning. Not only do you get well written story that captivates you, you also get stunning art to go along with it, and this pleases the artist in the greatly.

I am a little ashamed to admit that this is my first Neil Gaiman experience and I am not disappointed in it. We are told a story of a fox that falls in love with a monk and her struggles to keep him alive when others become jealous of his peace and plot his death. It was a simple story but very very beautiful. I found the story very enchanting but then I also found it a little slow and simple at times which is why it only reached the 4 star rating.

I liked all the characters, they serve their purpose they were given in the story. However, it is was only these purposes they served and they didn’t really go beyond that and lacked some depth. They were beautiful, but they were not complicated.

The art in this book was just simply wonderful. Yes, sometimes it was ugly and not really the kind of thing I would normally be attracted too, but that suited the story very much. The style was a mixture of watercolour style and drawing. The effect really added to the mystery of the story.

If I had one serious complaint with the story it would be that the story was too short and in fear of spoiling it my review seems to reflect that. That is the danger with graphic novels I suppose. If you have only a few pages and those pages mainly consist of art then you don’t have large amounts to talk about. Either way though, I strongly suggest this novel to everyone who likes old stories.

This book is really really good. That means something for me. I have really aggressively negative views on suicide but I am totally digging this book.

Like This, Try This Challenge

You must recommend a book based on another book, movie, tv show, etc similar to this: “If you liked _____, you should try _____ because _____.”

Any genre and reading level is fine and you may use any set-up you like, so long as you’re recommending a book based on something else and explaining why.

For more info check out the host blog.

Gaahh this is like the third time I have have done something like this. I am running out of things that I can connect. Luckily I only have to think of one. Check out my other one here.

If you liked:

Then you should try:

dark secrets 1

I don’t normally do paranormal things so I thought I would make it the ‘theme’ of this thing. While Ever Near is more serious, Dark Secrets 1 is filled with charming little stories that still can make a chill go through your body.

Create A Sentence Challenge

The challenge is my twist on the book spine sentence challenge.  For this challenge, I want you to pick some awesome books out and make a sentence with the first two words from each of your books.  I have tried this myself and it can be a little tricky because the lack of verbs in the first two words of the book.  Therefore, you can add another word that is not from the first two words of the books if you wish.  The more ridiculous, the better.

For more info check out the host blog.

So so so hard so mine is not ridiculous at all but it makes sense at least!

Now before last night, Daniel stared longingly.

Bold = Extra word.

Books used in order:

  1. The Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings
  2. Dark Secrets by Elizabeth Chandler

Though not great page count I feel good about the amount of pages read both days. I am glad I have gotten through 2 books already! Things will go downhill from here but hopefully I will get through more of my books.

One True Pairing Challenge

A person’s OTP is the couple that they love the most and ship the hardest.  This is regardless of gender and whether or not the couple is actually canon.  In fact, some of the most popular pairings are those that aren’t actually together in their story.  Which is beyond frustrating, am I right?  (Drarry!)

For this challenge, I want to hear all about your favorite literary OTP.  Tell me why you ship them.  Tell me how perfect they are for each other.  Vent about how frustrating it is that the author paired them with other people.  Give me proof about why they are actually canon, but nobody knows.  I want to hear it all.

For more info check out the host blog.

Oh my gosh, so hard. Like, the hardest thing ever. I cannot make up my mind so I decided to draw two of my favourite out of a hat and these are the ones I shall show you!

VK

My first one is Zero and Yuki from Vampire Knight. Kaname (the one in white) used to be apart of this love, but he broke my heart so out he goes (cries). They have both always been there for each other. Yuki in a very open and happy in a way that made Zero felt like he might actually have a home, with her, and helped him heal himself at his darkest. Zero was always there for Yuki in the shadows, never saying much you can tell that she is the only person he tolerates opening. Because he loves her. Their relationship gets rocky after Yuki goes through… some changes, but even when they swear to kill each other next they cannot help but look out for each other. If they don’t end up together I think I may have a heart attack.

daughteroftheforestMy next one would have to be Sorcha and Red from the book Daughter of the Forest. Sorcha is a princess that goes through so much so much and is unable to talk or even make a sound to convey anything that she wants or feels, even when in pain. But Red, a royal from their enemy lands saves her life and quickly comes to understand her better than anyone else despite the fact that she cannot say or write a word to him. He loves her so much that he was willing to let her go so that she may be happy, ans then he was willing to give up everything that ever meant anything to him to be with her. Just, so, gah. I don’t have words.

What is Book Spine Poetry?
Take a minimum of 3 books put them in a pile to make a poem.

Does it have to rhyme?
No.  Not at all.  The poem doesn’t have to make sense at all either.

Here is what I came up with!

Playlist Challenge

Make a playlist centered around at least ONE of the books you plan on reading during the read-a-thon.

Because this is a very simple challenge, you need to have at LEAST 5 songs on your playlist. Be as specific or as vague in your selections as you wish, but have FUN with it!

Prize offered for anyone who wants to enter. For more into check out the host blog.

This challenge seems a bit weird to me. How can I make a playlist for a book I haven’t read yet which is all my BoBs reads. This would make much more sense if it was for a book you have ready read because then you know what kind of playlist it needs. Oh well! Still fun :)

I choose the book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. The songs are chosen cause I can relate them to the books topic.

Playlist:

  1. Alexx Calise – Cry
  2. A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera – Say Something
  3. Christina Li – Disappear
  4. Life is Beautiful
  5. Chloe Moldovan Castledine – Don’t Forget Me

So there they are. Be sure to share your choices with me because I love to find new books and new music! I am in desperate need of music. It will also be interesting to see how people hear their books.

Manga Review – Vampire Knight (11-15)

VK11-15

Title: Vampire Knight [Vampire knight Volumes 11-15]

Author: Matsuri Hino

Genre: Supernatural, Manga, Romance, Action

Length: 939 (Aprox. total)

Rating: 5 Star

Manga Series Reviews: 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-19

Anime Series Reviews: 1, 2

Description/Synopsis:

The Night Class at Cross Academy has been abolished. Zero still attends the Day Class while carrying out his duties as a vampire hunter. Yuki now lives hidden away at the Kuran residence with Kaname, but can she embrace the life of a pureblood vampire?

Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Hello everyone and welcome back to another VK review. Lets get started shall we?

  1. Its one year after everything went down and the night class was cancelled from the academy. We are introduced to the new storyline that will be taking up the rest of the series, introduces new characters, and the talks about the struggles that each of our old characters have had over the last year.
  2. Chairman Cross becomes a more of a kick ass character. before he was just an ‘ex’ super vampire hunter with no reason as to why but in this we find out that he is in fact around 200 years old because he has more vampire blood in his body than the ordinary vampire hunter. Everyone in this story is more than they seem to be. We are introduced to a new situation with Takuma that is kind of confusing. Yuki starts to gain footing and purpose again after everything that happened. Kaname is still filled with dark secrets and Zero lusts for the kill.
  3. This volume is mostly about Kaname’s past and Yuki finally finds out that he is actually the Kuran ancestor. Much like how Kaname became a more dark character, Zero also seems to be going down a dark path.
  4. Kaname does something that breaks the hearts of many. The pure blood vampire Sara also becomes more of a main figure within the story and she does more than just take Takuma captive. We see a glimpse of an awesome power Yuki has and doesn’t know about it.
  5. Yuki tries to move forward and clean up the mess that Kaname is leaving behind him despite the fact she has no idea why he is doing it. She starts up the night class again and everyone including Sara join despite Kaname, Kain, and Ruka because they are off killing pure blood vampires. Ends on a Yuki about to bite Zero cliff hanger.

We have come to the end of the spoiler free section, so unless you don’t care I suggest you stop reading here. Bye!

Now, for everyone that is left lets discuss things.

First thing I want to talk about, what the hell is going on with Takuma and Sara? I think I need to read this section of the story again because I am still so lost. Why did she take him? Was it just to piss of Kaname? Then why does he stay with her when he gets a chance to leave? She doesn’t start tormenting him and controlling him until later. God I hate Sara, and all the little girl play things she has collected.  Part of me wont care if Kaname actually kills her, the other part of me though gets sad everytime a pure blood dies because they are rare. Conflicted!

Kaname totally broke my heart when he killed Aido’s father. Why?! He wasn’t a pure blood and he wasn’t standing in his way (from what I remember). He totally betrayed Aido’s love for him and Yuki’s in that one act. Poor, poor Aido. My eyes weld up. Kaname has gradually become darker and darker and with this he has completely gone off the rail. I don’t know if I like this new Kaname. He spent the first half of the series doing everything to save Yuki and protect her and now he is off on a pure bloods which includes killing Yuki. I just don’t understand! Im glad Yuki and Aido are still close after though. He totally could have gone off on her.

I like Yuki in this though, not only is she a strong and rare pure blood with powers which might involve blood wings coming out of her back (how bloody cool is that btw?) but she has gotten back the part of Yuki we originally fell in love with. The part of her that is human and goes through life with a purpose.

Zero was really starting to worry me in this section of the story. He has lost pretty much everyone he loves and one of them is walking around as a vampire, he starts to go off the deep end. I can’t have both of them breaking my heart. Thank god for the cliff hanger. Zero doesn’t function well without Yuki, he needs the friendship back! Not only Zero needs it though, the only person that Yuki really still has all the time, since the Chairman is working with the vampire hunter association, is Yori which I am so glad for. Yori is adorable. Yuki’s sadness seems never ending and its generally because of stuff other people have done.

So what do you guys think. Do you like this new direction the manga is heading in?
