2015 In Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog <3

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,700 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Top Ten Tuesday – Best Books Of 2015 (So Far)

topten

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created over at Broke and the Bookish where every Tuesday, Top Ten things of anything are listed. Todays Top Ten things are:

Top Ten Best Books I Have Read In 2015 (So Far)

I think this is an odd time to be doing this TTT because there is still half a month left, but this is when its happening apparently. If I get more good books to add to the list I shall do another one closer to the end of the year.

1. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton. This book was beautiful beyond words.

2. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Really powerful and so so good.

3. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Probably one of the best things ever written.

4. Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas. Who could not put this on the list?

Ava-lavender_march.png speak the secret garden queen of shadows

5. Nana by Ai Yazawa. All the drama. Its just so sad! (Manga’s are inclusive to the full amount of them that I read)

6. The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. Ending was a little silly but still good.

7. The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen. Wasn’t what I was expecting but I was hooked.

nana2 the handmaid tale The Invasion of the Tearling by Erika Johansen v2

8. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I have put this book down a bit low because while I like it I consider it a little bit pointless. But I still love it!

9. Blue Spring Ride by Io Sakisaka. Constant tension. I keep on waiting for this one thing to happen!

10. Ouran High School Host Club by Bisco Hatori. <3 <3 <3 I can’t believe I waited so long to get this set!

Book Haul – September – November

Book Haul

I have quite a few since I am doing 3 months worth of books, and I don’t remember when I got each so they re in no particular order. Lets get started shall we?

Books I Bought:

queen of shadowsThe queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

animals of farthing woodA group of forest animals unite to help each other to safety in this classic tale of tolerance, cooperation, survival, and friendship. When bulldozers enter Farthing Wood, the animals must escape before their homes are destroyed. They promise to stick together and protect each other – but then they get caught in a fire and nearly drown crossing a river. Will their pact hold? Both heart-wrenching and heartwarming, this beloved story has been translated into 16 languages.

ouran box setOne day, Haruhi, a scholarship student at exclusive Ouran High School, breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to the ‘Host Club’, a mysterious campus group consisting of six super-rich (and gorgeous) guys. To pay back the damages, she is forced to work for the club, and it’s there that she discovers just how wealthy the boys are and how different they are from everybody else.

beedle bardThe Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers’ attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,” “The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” “The Warlock’s Hairy Heart,” “Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump,” and of course, “The Tale of the Three Brothers.” But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter.

MissPeregrinesA mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Because You'll Never Meet MeOllie and Moritz are best friends, but they can never meet. Ollie is allergic to electricity. Contact with it causes debilitating seizures. Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.

A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother’s mysterious death, he’s lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.

One day, he’s tracked down by a man he’s never met—a man his mother claimed was dangerous. The man tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision.

soundlessThis book was sent to me upon request by Penguin. THANK YOU!!!!

For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.

But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon.

Richelle Mead takes readers on a triumphant journey from the peak of Fei’s jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiugo, where a startling truth and an unlikely romance will change her life forever…

September – November Wrap Up

wrapup

Hey guys! Im back kind of. I just want to say sorry for vanishing off the face of the earth for awhile there. I got so busy its actually quite silly. September was pretty normal, but then I got sick for about 3 weeks from two different things which is unheard of for me because I dont get sick but god did I, which stuffed up many plans and cost me about $300 in failed plans, something I am still trying to work through. It also put me behind in school work, which I had to cram in before the end of the semester. While doing that I also had to prepare for Supanova which I was taking very seriously, but I will talk more about that later one.

First off, in a completely random has nothing to do with books but I got my new pair of headphones which I have been waiting for, for about a year if not more.

Ok now if you have been paying attention you may have known why I was so excited for Supanova, but if not now I will clue you in. I got to meet a few wonderful authors such as Juliet Marillier who wrote one of my all time favourite books Daughter Of The Forest, Isobelle Carmody who wrote The Obernewtyn Chronicles, and the ever wonderful Sarah J.Maas. To celebrate her coming to Australia I decided to dress up as the Queen of Shadows Cover!

2015 Resolution Mid-Year Update

P1030987-Recovered

I think I need to do some things differently this year! So lets get this list of things I want to do started shall we?

Reading

  • I will complete my Goodreads challenge of reading 90 books this year.
  • Completely the reading goals I didn’t finish last year, then add more if I get more time.
  • Read at least 5 classics.
  • Read at least 5 different mangas/graphic novels.
  • Read at least 10 books that have been on my TBR shelf for more than a year.
  • Debut Author Challenge: Reading at least 6 books by a debut author.
  • Read things I feel I will enjoy rather than feel might be ok. Yeppers!
  • Only read one NetGalley book at a time. I haven’t read any books off of NetGalley because I am having issues getting through a book I got last year. I might have to give up.
  • Be better at reading the books which are apart of my bookclubs. Nope nope nope. None so far this year.

Blogging

  • Have the courage to finally start my booktube channel. I’m seriously freaking out about it! Not yet….
  • Participate in more challenges/memes/tags. Kinda..
  • Be more active in our book blogging/vlogging community. Kinda…
  • From this day forth, I will put up a post every three days! Yes! Mostly.

Goodreads: 38/90 – According to goodreadsthis puts me 11 books behind schedule D: I need to hurry up.

Classics: 4/5 Woooo go me.

  1. The Marvelous Land of Oz by L. Frank Baum
  2. The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit
  3. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
  4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Manga/Graphic Novel: 4/5 I see a theme

  1. Blue Spring Ride by Io Sakisaka. Pretty much all of it.
  2. Vampire Knight by Matsuri Hino. Vol 19
  3. The Sandman: The Dream Hunters by Neil Gaiman.
  4. Pet Shop of Horrors by Matsuri Akino. Vol 1&2

TBR Shelf: 9/10 So I think the part that made this so hard last year was that I didn’t use anything twice, but I am going to let myself do that this year. Its a bonus if I kill two or more challenges with the one book. Go me for having things that fit.

  1. The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit.
  2. Vampire Knight: Ice Blue Sin by Ayuna Fujisaki.
  3. Pet Shop of Horrors by Matsuri Akino. Vol 1&2
  4. The Sandman: The Dream Hunters by Neil Gaiman.
  5. The Quicksand Pony by Alison Lester.
  6. The Faerie Queen by Jeanie Lang.
  7. Losing You by Nicci French.
  8. Newes From The Dead by Mary Hooper.
  9. Midnight Embrace by Amanda Ashley.

Debut Author: FAIL 3/12 – I COMPLETELY forgot to even remotely think about this challenge…. Maybe I can do better next year.

  1. Dreamfire by Kit Alloway.
  2. Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

So I am pretty damn happy about what I have done so fare this year. All but one (not including goodreads) of my challenges I am just one off of each of them from completion! Yay me. So I am going to add back on one I completed last year but I think is still something I need to work on; Read 10 Adult novels.

Book Haul – June

Book Haul

Now since I am moving I am trying not to buy so many books. Also, steam had a sale this month so my money went to games instead :P But the two books I did buy were from when I was walking past a book store and just could not help myself. So this is a pitifully small list but hey, I should be moved by August and that happens to be my birthday month so hopefully I can just go crazy with the buying then!

AYearAThon – April

Yearathon

AYearAThon is a read a thon that happens each month throughout the year with different themes. You can find the goodreads group here.

Since I don’t know what my work schedule and personal life is going to be like between the 6th-12th, I am going to keep my list small again. Better to surpass your goal than to not complete it. There doesn’t seem to be a specific time in which this starts, I am starting the clock at midnight my time. This months theme is:

Fantasy

I am super excited about this theme, one of my favourite genres and a good time to cross of some things I have been dying to read for ages.

Book Haul – March

Book Haul

SimonVS_quote_NEWSent to me by the publisher.

Very tiny haul this month. I spent a lot of money on a single book and other non book related things such as shoes and makeup so I didn’t have a lot of money left to get more. Oh well, my TBR list is far too long anyways.

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

throne-of-glass-coverAfter serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
