Bout Of Books 17 – Wrap Up

Bout of Books

Soooooo I didn’t end up having much time for this read-a-thon as you can see. I didn’t do challenges and I only really got to read on the weekend. BUT I did manage to complete my overall goal of finishing at least 2 of my books I wanted to read so for someone in a reading slump I think thats pretty great.

So while I still have a nearly an hour left before my final day in this read-a-thon draws to a close, I am going to rest it here I think and call the end for me. While sometimes I can handle doing two weeks of read-a-thons, apparently this is not one of those times. I feel extremely sleep deprived, always having to be up with the sun and staying up late so I can actually get some reading done in the day. This plus the stress of hating my job and family issues that have been happening its taken a toll on me and I feel just destroyed and unwell. Having pushed through Half Bad must not have helped, because it made me feel like stopping earlier.

So today, day 7, I call a bust because I decided to go have a bit of fun and take my best friend, her little sister and her little friend to Dreamworld for the day. It was awesome, so I don’t feel bad about not spending the day reading. I finished 3 out of the 4 books I planned on reading, and I got half way and more through a couple of other books as well which adds up. So yay me! I also really liked taking part in all the challenges <3

So here are my end results:

Cover Colour Challenge

Pick a colour(s). Find four books with covers almost completely in that colour/those colours (they need to be at least 2/3 similar – basically they need to match or be the same colour – i.e. all green’s, all yellow’s, or match like the black and purple ones below).
List the books somewhere (blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) or paste the pictures of the books online in a post on your blog or on another site.
If you would like to know more check out the host blog.
I love love love this challenge. So simple but really lets you see what kind of colours are on your shelf. For this I chose green and I thought I had four perfect books but then it turned out that the spine of the last book I was thinking of was green while the cover was actually black (damn you half wild), so I had to find something close to perfect. As an added bonus they all have plant life on them!

Modern To Classic Challenge

Share one book that you believe will be considered a classic in 100 years time. Simple? I do have a few caveats, the book must have been published in or after 2005 and you need to provide two reasons for why this book will be a classic.

For me details check out the host blog.

When thinking of a bool for this challenge, only one jumped into my mind. But I thought I should at least consider others so I looked briefly at my other 4-5 star rated books. And I mean briefly. I scanned about 5 titles before I gave up because there was no point, I was going to choose this book anyway. Anyone who has been reading my blogs for awhile should be able to tell which book it is already. I choose:

On The Jellicoe Road By Melina Marchetta

1377087942onthejellicoeroadcover

Reasons:

  1. This book contains many many lessons. While life can be unbelievably sad and unfair this is so much joy that can be found in the simple things, which can turn into big things. Things you think you know, you may be completely wrong about and this can be the best thing ever. Friendship and love can come from the most unexpected places. Its never too late to start living, and so many more. All of which are things we as human beings are going to need to keep reminding ourselves and learning till the end of time.
  2. The story is told at an age and through a girl who needs to learn and come to understand all these things herself, just like many of its possible readers will be if they are willing to sit a moment, read the book, and absorb all the lessons and the meanings that its pages just drips with. Not to mention that it does it in a way where you are not bored to death and is a remarkably sad but still touching and heart warming story.

Book Haiku

Write a haiku about whatever book you’re reading right now.

For more information check out the host blog.

Wow aren’t I glad that I held off doing this challenge until I switched books, because having to write a haiku about Kissing In America would have just been painful. The book I am choosing to go with is Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda:

Oh to think of Blue,

Forever wondering who,

I’m just left with socks.

Only people who have at least started the book will understand this haiku but I don’t care. It gives me a giggle.

Character Face Off Challenge

Create the ultimate character face-off.

Pick two of your all-time favourite characters. They can be from the books you chose for the read-a-thon (or not — totally up to you).

Even though they are both your favourite, you HAVE to choose one as the winner. And tell me why.

Sell me on why this ONE character is your favourite character of ALL characters.

Check out the host blog for more details.

Umm excuse me what? Pick just one favourite character?! What bloody madness is this…  I really don’t think it can be done so I am restricting it to male characters, and from two of my favourite books.

Opponent #1: Jonah Griggs from On The Jellicoe Road

– WHO: Leader of the Cadets, an opposing side of a war.

– CONS: Temper, tormented past

– PROS: Brave, loyal, honest, sexy

Opponent #2: Red from Daughter of the Forest

– WHO: Ruler of a warring land.

– CONS: Kidnapper

– PROS: Protective, loyal, understanding, sexy

Winner: Red

Why: My head is screaming at me to put Jonah down as the winner because he is part of my all time favourite book, but it is failing to give me good enough reasons why. He is an amazing person. He has had to go through so much and the relationship that he and Taylor have is really complicated and beautiful. However, Red though he kidnaps Sorcha, then spends every waking moment to understanding her and doing everything for those he loves. Jonah remembers what Taylor likes to have for breakfast, but Red learns how to communicate and understand Sorcha though she never utters a word or makes a noise. He was willing to let her go to try and make her happy, then gave up everything he knew and loved to be with her.

Bout Of Books 13 – Day 1 Challenges

Bout of Books
Yay! The day has finally come and I can finally participate in all the challenges are happening during this event, and the first one that is happening this week is:

Bookish Survey Challenge

All you need to do for this challenge is answer the questions below then come back and link up your answers.

The Questions:

1. How do you organize your shelves?
2. What is one of your favourite book that’s not in one of your favourite genres?
3. What is the last 5 star book you read?
4. What book are you most excited to read during the read-a-thon?
5. What book do you recommend the most?

This contest is open internationally and has a prize of a book of choice from the bookdepository up to $15 USD. Check out the host blog.

1. This depends on which bookshelf! One of them is organised by hight and then by how much I like them. The other is organised by genre and then by size.

2. Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Science Fiction is not normally something I like but I really enjoy these books!

3. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I finished it yesterday and its one of my most favourite books.

4. Half Bad by Sally Green. I have been so interested to get into this one and this time I shall do it!

5. On The Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. I suggest this because it is my favourite, but I hate doing it because if they don’t like it I shall have to stop talking to them.

Bout Of Books 13

Bout of Books
The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 11th and runs through Sunday, May 17th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 13 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team
YAY! I think bout of books is one of my favourite read-a-thons and I didn’t get to participate last time so I am so excited to be able to give it ago in tomorrow. Once again I will be working so the chances of me getting much done is slim to nil, but I still get to participate in all the challenges which is part of what makes this so fun :D

My Goals

kissing in america SimonVS_quote_NEW half bad Ahlynn's Dreams by Julie C. Gilbert

  • I am always busy so I don’t even really get a day off work cause other obligations will be sucking up at least most of those days so I don’t know when I will get to each one or if I will. All four or more would be great but I don’t want to over reach.
  • To participate in at least one of the events each day.
  • Comment on at least 2 blogs/vlogs per day.
  • Above all enjoy myself while I do all this!

I hope to see you all through the read-a-thon! Be sure to link me to your pages so I can see them. I want to keep up.

So I don’t know if I consider this a dud thing or not. I read a few books and I participated in most challenges. I didn’t do all my goals though, I barely had time to read and do challenges let alone commenting to people so that fell flat. I hope I will have more time next time this challenge comes around. Yesterday was a total dud though. I didn’t do any barely reading and I didn’t do the challenge. I accidentally, and I really do mean accidentally, got drunk. One minute I was perfectly fine spacing out my drinks so they barely phased me at all then WHAM they all hit me at once hours later. I didn’t stick with my reading goals all that closely either because I think its better just to do what grabs you in a challenge.

MOVING ON.

And now onto the final challenge for this read-a-thon! Because of how the times work for me the challenge is still happening while the weeks has actually ended.

5 Book Challenge

It is 11:00 PM on a Sunday night. You are laying in bed thinking about all of the things you must do the next day. Tasks of the coming days consume your thoughts and while your mind is somewhere else you are caught off guard by a flash in the sky that is followed by a large wailing screech that pierces the air and shatters your bedroom window. Slowly you move to the window and what you see catches your breathe and causes you to stumble back a few steps. The aliens (at least you think they are aliens) have began to enter the city and destroy everything that is in their path. Through the window your view is consumed with destruction, screaming people and large flames that are dancing across the city at a fast pace. You notice that the creatures are heading in your direction and you realize you probably have about fifteen minutes before they reach your home. That means you have only about ten minutes to gather your belongings and escape before you are caught in the attack from the aliens invading the city.

Given the short amount of time you are only able to take 5 books with you. What books would you pick to take with you as you escape and prepare for the end of the world. Would you choose books that would help you survive in the post-apocalyptic world ,books for pleasure that would make you happy and take you to a fantasy reality or books that you can’t live without?

For more info check out the host blog.

Its scenarios raised here where I really wish I had some ‘how to survive in the wild’ kind of books upon my shelf. Will my Man vs Wild memories and my books be enough?!

The books I choose are:

1. On The Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta. This I picked because I would not be able to live without it.

2. The Host by Stephanie Meyer. Its got aliens taking over the world. Surely I can learn something? Its being great is a plus though.

3. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. I used to read it at least once a year until my copy died. It also has the added bonus of being a reminder of my mother. (I assume since both my parents are useless they die in the early advances of this invasion so I need memento of each of them).

1377087942onthejellicoeroadcover 9780316068048_custom-s6-c10 outsiders-17

4. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Because it will remind me that words are beautiful, not just the story they tell.

5.I really really really wanted to give this to The Hobbit or something in honour of my dad, but it doesn’t satisfy my fantasy needs completely so I am giving this spot to The Redemption of Althalus by David Eddings. My dad introduced me to this author though so I still have memories here.

9780752881676 redemption of althalus

I have only included books I own on my shelves right now. When I get other books on my shelves rather than my kindle this list would change a bit.

Till Next Time…
