Just inject this story into my veins.

Oh Kresley Cole, though I love your smut you did have me worried with the last book when you started mentioning things like ‘steaming semen.’ I could tell you wrote the book at certain sections, such as the main character being a confused girl with untapped power (check) and the allure of bad boys with attitude problems (check), but most the book seemed like it was written by a completely different author. Well done! That shows great skill to me. It was amazing to see how much you can focus on creating such a world and the people in it when you dont have to focus on throbbing penises popping up all the time.

Right from the get go I was snagged in the story. I loved the approach of slowly introducing everything and everyone in three different time frames. The 1st, the present after ‘The Flash,’ then through story telling the days before the flash, and finally all the days after the end of pretty much everything that lead our main character Evie to where she is at the beginning of the book. Though I was snagged from the beginning, the second I think I realised that the book was seriously going to hit me was before the Flash even happened. We are introduced to Evie’s best friend Mel at a number of points. After she did something that just made me love her character thinking “My Gods I love Mel,” straight after it was followed by “holly crap and shes totally going to die in the next couple of pages…” That moment right there sealed the book for me. Its one thing to make me laugh (which it did), its another to make me sad. I was seriously depressed and completely heartbroken. There was also another point which nearly had me in tears.

As people will probably work out quickly is that I am never a fan of zombies, which seem to be completely unavoidable when it comes to post-apocalyptic stories, so that was a downfall for me. Though they didn’t call them zombies and they didnt eat brains, they were pretty much the same. They were called bagmen and they were gross slimy creatures that just want to suck up the remaining water from the earth and thusly attack people for the water in their bodies. However I really liked  the idea of people embodying Cole’s interpretation of the Major Arcana Tarot Cards, and gaining power from them and engaging in epic battles that seem to repeat throughout the ages.

Jackson – The only character that we are properly introduced to that doesnt get a card. He probably doesnt need one though because his tough attitude and willingness to beat a man to death kind of helps him live. Im not really all that keen on Jack personally, he had just way too much teen drama going on for my liking, and everytime he said things like “A man has needs and if you dont give them too much ill get them somewhere else” I wanted to slap him. Of course, I wanted to slap Evie more for still pining after him when he said stuff like that to her.

The Empress Card is Evie – Evie is the main character, and I have bits of mixed feelings about her character. I loved the fact that she was a preppy popular cheerleader rather than a quiet girl who doesnt like the spotlight. Through most the book she was fighting and denying her awesome power which lets her control and grow plants, because she doesnt want to become the evil lady from her dreams. But then at the end of the book she has a dramatic change and totally embraces it and the idea of being the evil lady. How quickly this happened didnt work for me, and I found it annoying that she thought that if she practised her powers she had to be an evil person… She could have totally just embraced her powers and used them to put plants back on the earth, rather than using them to rip a guy in half.

Death – He is the big bad that is trying to kill Evie. Though we didnt get as much as I would have liked of him, he is probably one of my more favourite characters. Apparently for the next book he is going to be in the book more because a love triangle forms between him, Evie, and Jacks because past cards have had a love connection between the Empress and Death. I really cant wait to see how that turns out.

The Fool is Matthew – Completely bonkers and completely loveable. I dont know why, but I have a soft spot for characters of the crazy sort. You would be crazy and annoying too if you saw everything, past present and future. He is in my top favourite characters, even though I can completely understand why some of the other characters wanted to hit him. He requires much patience.

The Hermit – His character was slightly annoying to me. His character of being a super bad guy who tortures girls felt just way too forceful. Someone of such a sick personality could easily have been conveyed far better if it was said in less obvious ways without to repetition.

The Moon and The Magician – I didnt really get to know these characters to have much of an opinion of them, though at this time I like the Magician more than the Moon.

Be warned, the book ends on a major cliff hanger and many things go unanswered, and I don’t know if this is an attempt by Cole to make people buy the next book or not, but its going to be really painful for me to wait until October 1st to read the next instalment!

Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Oh I needed that. It has been awhile since I had to seriously convince myself to put a book down and go to sleep before the sun comes up. Thank you ever so much Kresley Cole.

Im not saying this book was perfect, it was riddled with things that were annoying. However for me the good outshone the bad.

Some of the bad would be that Cole tends to repeat herself quite a bit. She tells us things many many times and it does get annoying to get it brought up so often. I was consumed with the story, I hadn’t forgotten that detail just yet… You can also tell how things are going to pan out most the time with very little surprises. I also felt that semen was brought up a tad too much, and I mean it was brought up a lot. A sperm bank would have a wonderful time with the amount of sperm deposits that were brought up if they were to be receiving them.

Now some of the good. I thought the characters were pretty well written, not perfect but ever so enjoyable. My favourite was Salem, closely followed by Bettina’s Evil Queen godmother Morgana. Those two had me laughing out loud on a number of occasions. Some of my favourite Morgana lines are:

‘”Look at the pretties Bettina!”

“Prancing, prancing ponies for Bettina?” Morgana queried. “No? Seriously?” … “But how they prance.”

“Heads, Bettina!” Morgan cried, clasping her hand to her breast and batting her eyes. “A bag full of them! Just like your always wanted!”‘

I read that some people really didn’t enjoy Morgana all that much because of the way she treated Bettina, and because they thought she was a very typical character. I personally thought that we really didnt get to see much of her to pass that kind of judgement. She would just show up and half say things, insult, or say something delightful then go again. I also didnt really think she treated Bettina as badly as others, sure she called her freakling which at first I thought was a bit harsh, but later on it really grew on me. I wouldnt mind that as a nickname if I was her. Bettina also made some good comments about how she could tell she loved her in her own way, shes just a natural bitch and it was hard for her to turn off. I didnt mind Bettina, I liked her a lot more when she finally grew a backbone and got her awesome root power back. For someone who is supposed to come from quite a lot of ‘evil’ family I think that part of her could have been presented more. Evil can do good and good can do evil, they dont exclude each other and I dont think people remember that very often. I dont know where she stood on the how good or how evil scale.  I didnt get enough of her personality away from Trehan to really get full sense of her. Trehan was a dick, a well written bastard. I don’t really get the attraction the the abusive kind of male… no matter what good reasons he may have. And in true Morgana fashion “thats all I’ll say on the matter.”

I also loved even the slightest mention of characters I have read in her other books. Im fully planning on going back and reading all her books that relate to this Lore filled world. For me really this is what interests me most about the books. Sure, Im not going to complain about the sex, but its an added bonus, not the reason I read them. At this point im more interested in what is happening in that world as a whole, how all these characters connect, and their more broad lives, not just the sexy romantic bits.

Books and Life (In the Mail #4)

Wow guys did I go on an adventure for books the other day! Actually that whole afternoon was kind of an adventure… But first I think I need to start with some back story.

So the other day my internet buddy Author Unpublished posted a blog going on about how she is apart of a book club called Vaginal Fantasy and just how truly awesome she thinks it is so I went and had a peek. I was currently apart of no book clubs and had been looking for one to join anyway so I signed up. After signing up I went and had a look at the books they have listed for this months reading and I did little mental flips of joy because I knew the author, Kresley Cole, from a book I read (and still read often) a couple of years ago. Because I enjoyed this book so much, in an erotic mythical way, I had actually been meaning to try some of her other books, so joining the club just forced me to do this finally. The books I have to read are:

cvr9781451650051_9781451650051_hr Poision Princess

And thus began my afternoon of bookshop treasure hunting. I’ll just say now that I didn’t enjoy it.

At first I thought this was going to be really easy to find these books instore because I had seen a bunch of Cole’s books at Target so that is where my journey began. I went to Target and scanned the shelves but couldnt find any of her work under C, after this it didnt take me very long to work out that their system of sorting books didn’t mean much to them because no book was in its correct place. I then found the book I already own, the only one of her books I have read, A Hunger Like No Other. I kept searching and found just one another edition to the Immortals After Dark series, but neither of the books I wanted are from that series so I left to move onto the next book. I then moved onto a store called AllBooks4Less. Have you ever been into one of those stores? Its like someone just went and gathered all the books they could find then threw them all into a giant pile, put a sign on it, and called it a bookstore. They are just horrible despite the cheapness (they only charge $5 per book). Stay away if you can, the cheap is just to get you in there but its traumatic experience once you are. In here I found yet a different book from the IAD series. This was the only Kresley Cole book I found in the store despite I pulled every book off the shelf because they had more than one layer. I then moved onto a store Hyer Discount Bookworld which had practically no books in so I gave up. Getting really annoyed by this point turned to Kmart. Not having much hope I was making my way to the section I wanted I walked past the cook book section and there on the shelf just one copy of The Poison Princess! Just the one, and clearly out of place I went searching for where it might have come from in the hopes the other would be there. When I finally found its the rest of its copy (of which there were only 3 others) in the childrens section -_- this I found a little bit disturbing if it is anything like A Hunger Like No Other… Last but not Least I moved onto the only proper bookstore in my shopping department, Robin’s Books. To the erotic section I go and there it is Shadow’s Claim! The only Cole book on the shelf. To top it off the store clerk gave me a 20% discount cause it had a little nick on the back cover. Thank you store clerk for lifting my spirits, my journey to find this book took me hours. If I didn’t think I was going to seem crazy, I would have hugged him.

The not appearing crazy thing didn’t last long though as I moved on to do tafe work at the shopping centre. As anyone who has been following my blog for awhile I am studying Animal studies (is always the reason why there is a large gap between reviews) and for part of my workbooks I had to gather information of of the back of many many animal food products (x5 cans of dog food, x5 cans of cat food, x3 dry dog food, x3 dry cat food, certain brands and supplements for animals and the list goes on…). Rather than spend hours ans hours writing it all down I took pictures. So now Im the crazy person who has been taking photos of the animal food for about an hour, and to top it all off, a coles employee then comes up to me and asks me to leave. Gah what a day. I didn’t even get all the info I need and have to go back for more -_- Right now Im having to write about the difference between the nutrients/food a cow needs normally compared to when they are getting ready to be artificially insementated, so if you have any info on that chuck it my way XD

On another note I received a few books I won off of Goodreads in the mail over the last couple of weeks. Those books are:

I really need to somehow find some time to read…
