Movie Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
Well well well! The other night I finally got to go out and see Catching Fire at the movies, and though I got in free I think I would have spent the money on it. I don’t think I’ll see it in cinemas again though.
The movie is pretty much just a summary of what happens in the book. This is why I gave it such a kinda low rating, its not that it was all that bad, its just that there was a lot missing. They just focus on the major things that happen throughout the book, and in the movie directors defence, SO much happened in the book I knew there were going to have issues with the movie. I have series doubt of them being able to pull off the third book. But now I’m getting a head of myself.
So the movie starts and bam we are on the train getting ready to do the victor tour. Ok it wasn’t quite that fast, you get a minute or two of everyone talking about leaving but it did happen super quick. I found this a little disorientating, there wasn’t any easing into the storyline because of the quick start and you never get a breather from then on.
The tour happened pretty much how I thought it would, Katniss was pretty blank face the entire time and If I was Snow or anyone else I wouldn’t have believed she was in love with Peeta either. In the book I got the feeling she tried just a bit harder than that but I’ll take what I was given I suppose. They did alter one bit at the end of the tour though. They introduce Plutarch to Katniss but they left out the bit where he shows her his watch which caused her much thought and confusion throughout the book and helped her work out the trick behind the arena. I get why it was removed, but they could have left it in and everything would have been fine.
They also gloss over how the smell of roses and bloody on Snow is sickening to Katniss and why he smells that why. They hint at it at one point but that’s it. They also leave out most of all the wedding stuff which I didn’t really mind all that much.
Then we move onto how the remove everything surrounding surrounding the lake. The people Katniss tries and fails to help, how her dad taught her to swim there, all the talk about District 13 possibly still functioning. This results in everyone at the end just declaring they are going to 13, and the fact that Katniss can swim when she gets to the arena. In the book it was made of point of that not everyone from every district can swim because there isn’t really great big bodies of water for the to do it in. In the movie they just know how to swim. Both annoying but also understandable I guess. They should have put the bits about 13 in there though, because Katniss just accepts that district 13 in functioning just too easily for my liking.
The next big things that happen before they enter the arena that annoys me are the fact that they don’t go into why everyone is kissing and stripping in front of Katniss, its just random in the movie Peeta never explains it to her, and the fact that we don’t get to see them watching old games and studying their opponents. I was soo looking forward to that. They barely touch on how people won their games. They also skip over how Finnick won the last quarter quell. Just wasn’t acceptable. They also kind of gloss over how everyone of them are Haymitch’s friends.
Now we enter the arena. Most of what happened here I thought was pretty satisfactory because its the bit with the most action so of course they left everything in. One thing that really did annoyed me that they left out was the section where Peeta slams into the forcefield. It still happens, but no one questions why or how Katniss was able to scream a warning right before it happened. They completely gloss over this part and its all because of the poor planning on the first movie. They left out the fact that Katniss is pretty much deaf for half of that book/movie and thusly it seeped into this book. The reason she gives as to how the hell she knew that forcefield (because she doesn’t trust everyone she is with) is that when the Capital fixed her ears they did something that let her ear it, but nope. Its just glossed over. No questions of how she can magically tell were the pretty much invisible forcefield was.
The only other thing that I didn’t like was how it ended on Katniss’ eyes, that screen shot has been done a little too much for my liking.
They did do some things well. I loved the bit were Katniss breaks down when they announce that she will be going back in. They down play it a bit, but at least they put it in there. They also up played that she doesn’t get to say goodbye to her family which was downplayed in the books. Well done movie. Peeta is alot stronger in spirit in this one I think. He was soo angery at Katniss, I’m glad they didn’t downplay that. They also showed how much Prim had grown up very well, and how much Katniss wanted to kill Haymitch by the end of the book despite the fact they left out sections. All of the other characters were done very very well I think, Mags was awesome and I was so sad when she died. The rage they showed each of the victors felt about having to do the games again was also very well portrayed. The Monkeys were completely horrifying as was the fog section. The section with the birds was also done well, I believed how much that mind fucked Katniss.
So in conclusion it was ok, a total summary but ok. I don’t have high hopes for the third.
