From Manga To Anime – Vampire Knight

VampireKnight_DVD01-web

Title: Vampire Knight [Vampire Knight Season 1]

Genre: Supernatural, Romance, Anime

Rating: 5 Star

Anime Series Reviews: 1, 2

Manga Series Reviews: 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-19

Description/Synopsis:

Vampire Knight tells the story of Yuki Cross. The earliest thing she remembers is being attacked on a snowy night by a vampire, and being rescued by Kaname Kuran, who is also a vampire. The story takes place 10 years after that event, Yuki is now the adopted daughter of the Headmaster of Cross Academy. She and her longtime friend Zero Kiryu keep peace at the academy, making sure no problems arise between the Day Class (humans) and the Night Class (vampires). However, the peace they try to keep is fragile, and personal feelings begin to interrupt their duty. It’s based on the manga by Matsuri Hino, which is excellent. If VK is half as good as the manga, it’ll be a great anime. There is some action, but expect more romance from VK.

Anime Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Oh how I love it.

For the most part the anime follows really closely to how the manga was written and I love it even more for that. However, it does go off script and change a few things now and again. The third episode for example is pretty much their own creation. It shows things that never happened in the manga and moves around and hints at things that dont get mentioned till the end of volume five like Ichiru Zero’s brother. He gets mentioned a couple of times but he was not brought up in the manga for quite awhile. Yagari also gets introduced differently. He just shows up in the manga and he gets introduced in the anime.

Im a little sad to say that the anime is not as well drawn as the manga. I find the faces a bit… odd at times. That being said though it is still very pretty and they went to great lengths to make certain scenes stand out. Like when Yuki remembers things or is having inner turmoil they really play upon the ideas of how that would look visually from the manga. I think some of those sections are my favourite art wise.

The soundtrack for the anime (thus far) is very simple but very well chosen I feel. The music is very dark and it suits the overal mood of the anime very well. The opening and closing songs are also well done. The opening song for this season is Futatsu No Kodou To Akai Tsumi by ON/OFF, and though it kind of has an upbeat sound, I interpret it as more of a song that demonstrates all the struggles they are going through, its up and down and kind of has a just keep going feel to it. The beautifully drawn and Matsuri Hino inspired opening art also feels that way to me. The ending song is Still Doll by Kanon Wakeshima has a very different feel to it. The music is both creepy and dark. It has moments with it perks up with the creepy and then kind of goes down into despair. This combined again with the inspired darker Matsuri Hino VK drawings of Yuki sitting with a creepy bunny with red tear running down her face. This I think is great cause it kind of speaks to how Yuki always feels like no matter what she does someone she loves gets hurt. Still Doll and just Kanon Wakeshima in generally are some of my favourite music to date.

If I were to suggest which language you should watch it in, I would suggest Japanese with English subtitle. Now, I may be a bit bias here suggesting that. The first time I watched Vampire Knight it was with English subtitles and whichever way I see/do something first is generally the way I would prefer it from there on. However, if I try to ignore that fact I think I would suggest it anyway. I don’t think the English voice actors were very well chosen, they just don’t really suit their personalities. I could probably accept most peoples but Kaname’s is just awful. The English voices try to make everyone seem happier than they are and Kaname just doesn’t have that naturally happy upbeat. He should always sound mysterious! Not chipper…

But what really matters in anything you want to invest your time in be it book or series? Is it good. Oh god yes it is. Do you still love the characters in the anime? Yes when they were in Jap with Subs. The anime portrayed them very well and because they stuck pretty closely to manga it conveys the characters correctly. Is there still action and romance? Oh god yes, if there wasn’t then it wouldnt be the same story in the slightest. A romance story that has people struggling back and forth not knowing what do to with each other in amongst a world that is naturally bloody and violent.

I think I would recommend that people start with the anime if they want to do this series. The anime is a bit easier to follow because of how they introduce things and kind of simplify everything, however, if you even remotely like the anime I suggest you start reading the manga. It continues on way after the anime ends and it is just in general is much better.

On a side note, Vampire Knight is where I got my ending line for my blogs. At the end of each episode it says

I’ll also show you a sweet dream

————————————- next night

it stuck with me until I got what I use now. Now go watch the anime!

Manga Review – Pet Shop Of Horrors

petshop of horrors 1

Title: Pet Shop of Horrors [Volumes 1&2]

Author: Matsuri Akino

Genre: Manga, Horror, Supernatural

Length: 200

Rating: 2 Star

BuyFrom_Grey_160x30

Description/Synopsis:

Count D has moved his petshop from New Yorks Chinatown to Japan, in this follow-up to the popular Pet Shop of Horrors series. The Count prides himself on selling love in the form of magical creatures. But buyers beware–if the contract is broken, the Count cannot be held responsible.

Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

I have read the first two volumes of this series and I think that may be enough for me. Since nothing much happens within the first two volumes of mangas generally, which is why I normally review them in lots of five, this review will only be a partial review.

I read the first volume and I found it weird. It was different from things I would normally read, but I had not yet decided if this was a bad thing. I found the idea of it kind of interesting. A random mysteries guy that has a pet shop with the most strange and mystical creatures on earth which seemingly only silly people who cannot follow the rules on how to care for them come to get. I held off judgement until I picked up the next volume.

The second volume settled it for me. It was just too strange and no actual storyline seemed to be coming so I stopped for a number of reasons.

All the pets that get purchased from this pet shop all appear human to the people that take them in for whatever reason. While I kind of liked this, I think I would have preferred if they were actually really awesome animals, rather than a human with rabbit/lizard/bird resemblances. Granted, if they were animals to the people they wouldn’t be able to develop the love connection they all seemed to get before they stuffed everything up and one or both of them die. But still.

Because there are four stories per volume I also found it really hard to grow attached to any of the characters before they were gone. They came and went too quickly. There were only really two characters that were in the story more than once. Count D and this police officer. However, the officer was pretty boring and I didn’t really have much interest in knowing anymore of his story, then Count D was supposed to be mysterious so pretty much nothing of his story was given.

The fact that these two start spending a bit of time together kind of gave away the feel that a plot may be coming at some point in the future, but I wasn’t really willing to sit around and read three or more volumes to find out what the plot was supposed to be. The small ones I got were really predictable. He gives them a special pet with a set of instructions, they don’t follow them, then something gruesome happens. The end.

All that being said though I can see why someone might like it. I have watched anime that are just a predictable like Hell Girl. You could skip the first four or five episodes of that series and not feel lost at all at the following episode where the plot finally starts to come in. However, this one just didn’t seem draw me in like the other one did and I don’t have much of an idea why. Perhaps I didn’t like the characters as much?

Either way, other people seem to have really enjoyed this series. If you are one of them, please let me know. When does the plot start to come into the story? Would you suggest that I push through to see if I like it better? Please and thank you.

Book Haul – September – November

Book Haul

I have quite a few since I am doing 3 months worth of books, and I don’t remember when I got each so they re in no particular order. Lets get started shall we?

Books I Bought:

queen of shadowsThe queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

animals of farthing woodA group of forest animals unite to help each other to safety in this classic tale of tolerance, cooperation, survival, and friendship. When bulldozers enter Farthing Wood, the animals must escape before their homes are destroyed. They promise to stick together and protect each other – but then they get caught in a fire and nearly drown crossing a river. Will their pact hold? Both heart-wrenching and heartwarming, this beloved story has been translated into 16 languages.

ouran box setOne day, Haruhi, a scholarship student at exclusive Ouran High School, breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to the ‘Host Club’, a mysterious campus group consisting of six super-rich (and gorgeous) guys. To pay back the damages, she is forced to work for the club, and it’s there that she discovers just how wealthy the boys are and how different they are from everybody else.

beedle bardThe Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers’ attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,” “The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” “The Warlock’s Hairy Heart,” “Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump,” and of course, “The Tale of the Three Brothers.” But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter.

MissPeregrinesA mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Because You'll Never Meet MeOllie and Moritz are best friends, but they can never meet. Ollie is allergic to electricity. Contact with it causes debilitating seizures. Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.

A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.

Book Haul

Now in my last book haul I said I would hold off buying more books for a couple of months and so far I held true to that! The four books (hahaha) that I have in this book haul today are ones that I have been given this month. Let me tell you it has been really difficult because there have been a few books I really want released this month but I have held off! No doubt when I break my book ban I am just going to go buy heaps of books again… Oh well thats future Jazz’s problem.

nana5So my boyfriend and I have an agreement that every dollar I spend on him from food to petrol getting him places, he must spend said dollar on books for me. These are two of those books. Thank you!

Nana K. is going home–for an awesome TrapNest concert! She drags Nana O. along, convinced that somehow Ren will sense his ex-flame in the audience. But life is never that easy, and Nana O. isn’t sure if she even wants Ren back. saint anythingThank you to Penguin for sending me this book!

Peyton, Sydney’s charismatic older brother, has always been the star of the family, receiving the lion’s share of their parents’ attention and—lately—concern. When Peyton’s increasingly reckless behavior culminates in an accident, a drunk driving conviction, and a jail sentence, Sydney is cast adrift, searching for her place in the family and the world. When everyone else is so worried about Peyton, is she the only one concerned about the victim of the accident?

Enter the Chathams, a warm, chaotic family who run a pizza parlor, play bluegrass on weekends, and pitch in to care for their mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Here Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance. And here she meets Mac, gentle, watchful, and protective, who makes Sydney feel seen, really seen, for the first time.

The uber-popular Sarah Dessen explores her signature themes of family, self-discovery, and change in her twelfth novel, sure to delight her legions of fans.

what she leftThank you Penguin for sending me this book!

Gone doesn’t mean forgotten.

When Alice Salmon died last year, the ripples were felt in the news, on the internet, and in the hearts of those who knew her best.

But the person who knows her most intimately isn’t family or a friend. Dr Jeremy Cook is an academic whose life has become about piecing together Alice’s existence in all its flawed and truthful reality.

For Cooke, faithfully recreating Alice’s life – through her diaries, emails and anything using her voice – is all-consuming. He does not know how deep his search will take him, or the shocking nature of what he will uncover…

So since my haul is rather dull this week I present to you a little something extra! This is some my book adventure during the month of April. Enjoy ~

Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Because these are just random little short stories that really have nothing to do with the actual series other than having the same characters in them, I am going to keep this review short and sweet. Unlike the other collection of short stories involving Vampire Knight Characters, Ice Blue Sin, I actually liked this one. I found the overall stories to be fun and actually reflect the characters they were about.

Deranged Love

While this was not one of my favourites of the collections, I did find it interesting to be inside Rido’s head and to experience things from his point of view for awhile. Get to know what on earth actually makes him tick because we didn’t really get to see much outside of him being totally crazy in the series.

Gifts For Yuki

I loved this story. Yuki has really always been a terrible student since she generally has always put things she considers to be more important than school ahead of her studies. Like protecting her Day Classmates from vampires, or doing something special for someone she cares about. Aido has always been very gifted when it comes to learning so Kaname brings him in to tutor her. Everyone is very excited when Yuki finally gets a perfect score. For about half a moment. I loved watching Aido freak out about how Kaname will react if Yuki does badly on her next test. I also loved how Kaname just showers Yuki with heaps of extravagant gifts for ages for the accomplishment, that is such a thing he would do. I also loved how Yuki once again buts her health and studies to the side to make them both a present. I thought this was a very cute and true representation to how these events would have gone down.

Hidden Love

I just adored this little story and I actually found it very beneficial to how I viewed Sara in the actual series. It added a little more depth where it was needed.

Queen of the Abyss

This story was fine I suppose but I found it really boring. It was another one where I don’t really understand why we were being told it. When I picture that time that Yuki and Zero were apart, a story a boring as this really didn’t come up. Zero creates much more interesting or feel worthy situations than this.

A Maiden’s Melancholy

This might have been my least favourite of the lot. I really have no idea why it was in there. I liked the fact that the only person White Lily got along with was Zero (I think it was because he raised her or something). But this story just took it too far. This took that really nice relationship and made it a bit twisted. The horse cannot possibly be in love with him and want to be with him. This story actually made me a bit uncomfortable.

In a Thousand Years

Though I found this to be a bit pointless, this story is still nice. It gave some of the Day Class students an ending, I didn’t really understand why the night class people were there. I think they would have better things to do with their time.

Now the overall book I found was not written the very best. The style tried to be that of a manga since thats where all its ideas came from, but what I think the author of the book failed to understand was that does not translate well into a novel. The writing technique is different, and because of this and the sometimes very bland writing it did take me awhile to get into this book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has finished and like the Vampire Knight Series, but not to anyone who hasn’t. The last story is a bit of a spoiler for those not up to date.

Review – MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

I went into this book with such high hopes because Vampire Knight is one of my all time favourite things since I accidentally discovered it on youtube one lunchtime at school.

All of them were shattered.

HATED this book. The only reason it is not in the negatives is because it had a few fleeting moments where I thought I was enjoying myself.

I am going to chalk most of my dislike about the book to the fact that it was not written by Matsuri Hino, the author of the VK series. Most of the time I felt like I was reading bad fan fiction which I guess I was.

The start of the book was very rushed and everything kept jumping all over the place and just really didn’t make much sense at all. The dialogue between the different characters at no point felt natural to me and was all very forced and was anything any of those characters I know so well would do or say.

I think the thing I disliked the most however was that I didn’t like characters which I loved in the series when they were in this book. They were not themselves.

The second story about Zero was a little bit better. I found the story of that one much more interesting and I actually thought that the characters were pretty true to themselves. However, this story was not enough to bring the book up more than just the one star because there simply was not enough of it. This story was only about 30 pages of the book.

I find it very hard to recommend this book to anyone. I can see on goodreads that I am but one of a few who have felt this strongly about the book. I would suggest VK lovers read it just so I can know if anyone actually agrees with me.

AYearAThon is a read a thon that happens each month throughout the year with different themes. You can find the goodreads group here.

This year I am starting with the March theme because there was no way January was going to happen when I was moving across the country, and the February theme didn’t really interest me that much, so March it is. There doesn’t seem to be a specific time in which this starts, I am starting the clock at midnight my time. This months theme is:

Bench Warmers

For those who might not understand, that means that any books that has been sitting on my shelf for awhile. Even though I am not working at the moment and have a pretty open schedule, I am still going to try and keep my goals simple since I am still dealing with hassles with my new house.

Top Ten Tuesday – Favourite Heroines

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created over at Broke and the Bookish where every Tuesday, Top Ten things of anything are listed. Todays Top Ten things are:

Top Ten Favourite Heroines

I… I just can’t… I have literally been staring at all the books/mangas/movies I have loved and have had female characters in there that I love and I just cannot pick my favourite. It is hard enough to pick my favourite book which has many people and a story to love but just one character? I just can’t do it. So this list is in no particular order.

1. Sorcha from The Sevenwaters Series by Juliet Marillie – The struggle she has to go through pretty much all by herself. She is a truly awesome and strong heroine.

2. Faina from The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey – While she isn’t a typical choice, I just love the mystery surrounding her and that makes her an amazing character.

3. Cinder from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – She is such an awesome characters. I love how she handles things and her general personality.

4. Ceriana from The Forgotten War by Howard Sargent – Im not even going to go into why I love her because it would ruin it, but I love her.

sorcha Fiana Cinder_Cover 91JrUQ9WgOL._SL1500_

5. Lucy from Elfen Lied by Lynn Okamoto – She goes through so much struggle and it has made her sort of bad (well really bad), but she doesn’t want to be. Her story and character is just amazing.

6. Wanda/Melanie from The Host by Stephanie Meyer – I am putting them together since they are for pretty much all of the book. Together they really make a completely well rounded character who is so interesting.

7. Katniss from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Do I really need to go into this one? Im sure she is on a lot of lists this week.

8. Rose from The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead – Again, do I need to say much. Rose may have some issues but she is still an awesome female of butt kicking.

9. Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – I felt like I needed to put a heroine from the classics in here. She goes for what she wants even if its looked down on, and she stays true to herself.

10. I struggled with choosing this last place, there are still a number of heroines I wanted to put on this list, but since I have mostly picked goody goody people I have chosen to put Nyx from Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge – She is brave and willing to sacrifice herself for those she is supposed to love, but because she is being asked to do those things makes her have hatred within her heart and this makes her an interesting heroine.
