October Wrap Up + November Schedule

I am going to keep this one short and sweet this week. I took part in Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-thon and managed to get a couple of books down, finish one from last month and I am currently a good way through Kingdom of Ash. I am really enjoying it and thus far it seems like its going to be a good way to end the series.

What I Finished

What I’m Currently/Planning on Reading

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon – October 2018 Wrap Up

And its all over! I am really happy with how it went! I nearly participated in all the challenges and this is one of my best page results for this read-a-thon! I had an amazing time and would really like to know how you all did so link me to your wrap up!

Total Pages Read: 733

Books Finished:

Closing Survey!

1. Which hour was most daunting for you?

Hours 9 and 10 for sure. I actually crashed for about 2-3 hours after hour 10.

2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read!

3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners?

I really loved The Rest of us Just Live Here. It was such an easy read and I did enjoy myself even if it wasn’t your standard fantasy.

4. What’s a really rad thing we could do during the next Read-a-thon that would make you happy?

I think I enjoyed the old structure for the read-a-thon, but in saying that I did like the more relaxed way of the mini challenges.

5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep?

I will definitely will participate again. I want to be active in other ways as well but I need to decide things like that closer to the actual event.

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon – Hour 7

deweylogo-400x335

Hello my lovely people of blog land. We are now into hour seven of this wonderful read-a-thon and I thought this would be a good time to update you all on how things are going. As this read-a-thon started at 10pm for me, I had already been up over 12 hours when it started. This means in hour seven, at 4am, I am struggling to keep my eyes open as I read and I think that I may need to take a nap for an hour or two to try and wake myself back up a little.

Currently Reading: Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

Total Pages Read: 168

Opening Survey

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?

I am reading from the land down under! (Australia)
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?

I didn’t really create a stack for this read-a-thon because I know my mood will probably change and I have been going through a bad (horrible) reading slump, but I am going to say that I am most looking forward to starting my second book as that means I completed one!
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?

I know I will at some point go and get myself sushi because I always do, and it will be glorious.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!

I am 24, own a cat, live with 4 other people and aspire to work in a wildlife sanctuary (as well as read books for a living haha)
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to?

I completed forgot to have a nap before the read-a-thon started this time so doing something differently has gone out the window already! But it will still be enjoyable.

Happy Birthday Poem

In this mini-challenge, I challenge you to read a poem written by a poet born in October, to celebrate the October setting of the Dewey Readathon. I have listed the birthday followed by poet name and title of poem and a link to read the poem on-line. Please read one of the following poems and make a comment about which one you read and how you liked it

Challenge page.

For this challenge I chose number four (Oct. 21) Jilly Dybka:  “Carnaval of Souls.”

Carnival of Souls

The bird-like woman
at the ramshackle carnival—
the only one riding
a roller coaster in the rain.

At the ramshackle carnival
the sparse crowd seeks shelter.
A roller coaster in the rain
has but one passenger.

The sparse crowd seeks shelter.
The only one riding
a roller coaster in the rain:
the bird-like woman.

I like this poem because to me it speaks of great personal struggle or sadness, and the desire, or the overwhelmingness of it is stopping someone from letting it go. In a situation most people would avoid, like a ramshackled roller coaster in the rain, a single woman fails to seek shelter with the rest of the people.

Book Memories

That’s all I want from you- your book memories!  Just leave a comment, or a link if you’re posting it on your blog or twitter or litsy or instagram or tumblr or goodreads or whatever social media site you most prefer.

Challenge page.

For this I am going to go with really my first clear bookish memory of my father reading The Hobbit to me as a child. I think it was this early interaction with a proper book (not just a picture book) and it being fantasy has really shaped me as a reader even though because of my dyslexia there was a very painful time in my life where the idea of reading anything seemed to out of reach.

If you would like to see my answers to other challenges check out my twitter account.

Book Haul – September – November

Book Haul

I have quite a few since I am doing 3 months worth of books, and I don’t remember when I got each so they re in no particular order. Lets get started shall we?

Books I Bought:

queen of shadowsThe queen has returned.

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

animals of farthing woodA group of forest animals unite to help each other to safety in this classic tale of tolerance, cooperation, survival, and friendship. When bulldozers enter Farthing Wood, the animals must escape before their homes are destroyed. They promise to stick together and protect each other – but then they get caught in a fire and nearly drown crossing a river. Will their pact hold? Both heart-wrenching and heartwarming, this beloved story has been translated into 16 languages.

ouran box setOne day, Haruhi, a scholarship student at exclusive Ouran High School, breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to the ‘Host Club’, a mysterious campus group consisting of six super-rich (and gorgeous) guys. To pay back the damages, she is forced to work for the club, and it’s there that she discovers just how wealthy the boys are and how different they are from everybody else.

beedle bardThe Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers’ attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: “The Wizard and the Hopping Pot,” “The Fountain of Fair Fortune,” “The Warlock’s Hairy Heart,” “Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump,” and of course, “The Tale of the Three Brothers.” But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter.

MissPeregrinesA mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs.

A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

Because You'll Never Meet MeOllie and Moritz are best friends, but they can never meet. Ollie is allergic to electricity. Contact with it causes debilitating seizures. Moritz’s weak heart is kept pumping by an electronic pacemaker. If they ever did meet, Ollie would seize. But Moritz would die without his pacemaker. Both hermits from society, the boys develop a fierce bond through letters that become a lifeline during dark times—as Ollie loses his only friend, Liz, to the normalcy of high school and Moritz deals with a bully set on destroying him.

A story of impossible friendship and hope under strange circumstances, this debut is powerful, dark and humorous in equal measure. These extraordinary voices bring readers into the hearts and minds of two special boys who, like many teens, are just waiting for their moment to shine.

The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.

For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation.

But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon.

Richelle Mead takes readers on a triumphant journey from the peak of Fei’s jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiugo, where a startling truth and an unlikely romance will change her life forever…

As Elspeth strives against her captors, she learns that Rushton and her friends have fallen into the hands of the deadly slavemasters that rule the Red Land. And worst of all, as Elspeth stumbles, the Destroyer creeps ever closer to his goal: awakening the cataclysmically destructive weaponmachines that Elspeth has been charged with stopping. Has all her sacrifice been in vain?

unforgivenFRUTIGERThis book was sent to me unsolicited by Penguin. THANK YOU!!!!

Tick-tock.

September – November Wrap Up

wrapup

Hey guys! Im back kind of. I just want to say sorry for vanishing off the face of the earth for awhile there. I got so busy its actually quite silly. September was pretty normal, but then I got sick for about 3 weeks from two different things which is unheard of for me because I dont get sick but god did I, which stuffed up many plans and cost me about $300 in failed plans, something I am still trying to work through. It also put me behind in school work, which I had to cram in before the end of the semester. While doing that I also had to prepare for Supanova which I was taking very seriously, but I will talk more about that later one.

First off, in a completely random has nothing to do with books but I got my new pair of headphones which I have been waiting for, for about a year if not more.

Ok now if you have been paying attention you may have known why I was so excited for Supanova, but if not now I will clue you in. I got to meet a few wonderful authors such as Juliet Marillier who wrote one of my all time favourite books Daughter Of The Forest, Isobelle Carmody who wrote The Obernewtyn Chronicles, and the ever wonderful Sarah J.Maas. To celebrate her coming to Australia I decided to dress up as the Queen of Shadows Cover!

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon – October 2015 (Wrap Up)

Feelings:

AND WE ARE DONE! I feel pretty good about the whole thing. The only books I finished were Nana volumes though but thats ok. I shall show you all the things I read even if I didn’t finish them. How did everyone else go? Do you feel good about the amount you read? I feel a bit like a cheat because most of mine were manga pages so they don’t really count. But oh well!

What I Read:

Total Pages Read: 1258

Closing Survey

Which hour was most daunting for you?

The beginning right before my nap sleep. I don’t know what I was thinking. As if I could stay awake that long.

Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?

The Throne of Glass series, The Lunar Chronicles and other books like that are very interesting. However they are very long and are not really go for a challenge like this so I suggest graphic novel or shorter stories in general.

Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?

None at all! I loved the mini challenges and the time from really makes it hard for you cram anymore stuff into the read-a-thon. Then we wouldnt get any reading done!

What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?

The use of the world clock for start times. The first time I participated that wasn’t there and it made it confusing.

How many books did you read?

I read 6, but I only finished 4.

What were the names of the books you read?

See above.

Which book did you enjoy most?

Probably Nana volume 4. I love The Animals of Farthing Wood, but Nana holds more intense emotions.

Which did you enjoy least?

Dragonfly In Amber. This isnt to say I am not enjoying it, but out of them all I enjoy it the least.

How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?

YES! I think I may want to help host a challenge next time, or do a prize perhaps? Depends on my schedule then.

How did everyone else go? Link me to your wrap up so I can share in your efforts and congratulate you!

Blackout Poetry

You will need some text on paper that you are comfortable using a marker on. It can be an old book, newspaper, magazine. Anything will work. Then you’re going to use a black marker (or another dark color if you don’t have black) to mark out most of the text, leaving a poem behind.

Who Am I? Book Style!

Think about your one of favorite books.  Then give 3-5 clues about the book.  Others can then guess at the title/author.

Host blog.

I am going to do two of these since I think they will be sort of easy to work out for those who follow my blog.

  • I am just a girl.
  • Others want me to fly but I have never had the desire.
  • My family is strange.

and

  • I was abandoned by my mother.
  • I am part of a war that not everyone knows is happening.
  • I know a boy who killed his father.
  • I dream about a boy in a tree.

This was good fun, if I had more time would think of more!

I have a fun mini-challenge, just take a picture aka Shelfie of your shelves, or you and your shelves, post it up somewhere and link it below. Easy peasy, right?

His fingertips stopped just at the edge of the white line. “Celaena,” he breathed, his voice laced with pain—and hope. This was all she had left—his outstretched hand, and the promise of sushi, of something better waiting on the other side of the line.”

Book Mad Libs

Here’s what you’re gonna do:
1) pick a paragraph (not too long) from the book you’re reading
2) remove some of the nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, and either
3a) get a friend (in person, over the phone, over the internet–whatever!) to fill in the words for you mad-libs style or
3b) fill them in yourself from the spoiler-texted word list below
4) post your hilarious paragraph on your blog and link us to it or leave it in a comment here!
